Maya Hawke will star in the film “Magic: the Gathering”

Maya Hawke will star in “Magic: The Gathering,” a film version of the wildly popular trading card game.

Hawke’s role has not been revealed. Plot details also remain under wraps, although the tabletop game takes place in a multiverse of fantasy worlds and involves players engaged in battle, acting as wizards known as Planeswalkers. Hawke is expected to feature an ensemble of actors who have yet to be cast, according to Deadline, which was first to report the news.

Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro Entertainment are producing the live-action film, with Matt Johnson (“Blackberry,” “Nirvanna the Band the Show”) set to direct. Johnson, a longtime fan of “Magic: The Gathering,” is also writing the screenplay with Noah Gardner (“Super 8”) and Aidan Fitzgerald (“Calls”).

“I was x&0 with good breakers before the second day of GP Detroit and I was like, ‘I’m going to drop out of film school and become a professional Magic player,'” Johnson said. “Pod one, I’m sitting across from Rich Hoaen. By the fifth round I’m x&5 and I’m so tilted that I crown Lifespinner and a deadly board (I’m serious) for a solo Jugan. My opponent advances to the final stage Rend Spirit and within 10 minutes I’m heading back to Toronto thinking “My Magic career is officially over.” To all the dreamers reading this: in every pool there is a deck for day 2.”

Hawke is best known for Netflix’s “Stranger Things” and she has also appeared in projects like Quentin Tarantino’s “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” Wes Anderson’s “Asteroid City,” Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s feature film “Do Revenge” and Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro.” She voiced Anxiety in Pixar’s “Inside Out 2”. She next stars in Lionsgate’s “The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping.”
