This is frustrating and confusing news for 350,000 Minnesotans. Due to changes in federal funding, Medicare plans are being cut.
Laurel Heppner sells Medicare plans with the Heppner Group.
“We’ve actually talked to people who are crying, who got a letter from the insurance company saying their plan will no longer be available. And they’re just confused,” Heppner said.
Seniors have three choices when it comes to health insurance. First, you can just get standard Medicare. This means no bonus. But if something happens, there’s no limit to the fees you’ll have to pay.
Next, Medicare Advantage. This is where Medicare has agreements with certain companies. Premiums are lower, but you often need to have in-network doctors and referrals for certain things.
Another option is additional coverage. You will get this from private insurance companies. It costs more, but you can use any doctor you want for better coverage. All of these changes affect the Medicare Advantage environment.
For example, the most popular plan covers catastrophic care like cancer treatment with an out-of-pocket maximum of $3,800. With the changes in 2027, the amount payable will rise to $5,900 and, in Hennepin County, almost $10,000.
A five-night hospital stay in 2026 would cost $400. In 2027, it will be $2,250.
Coverage changes could be concerning for patients and their providers. A doctor at Twin Cities Eye Consultants says 85 percent of his patients are on Medicare.
“What could happen is that someone who has been seeing one of our doctors for 10 years can no longer come here with that coverage,” said Charlie Forbush, CEO of Twin Cities Eye Consultants. “It is difficult to restart this relationship and resume this care; this continuity of care is very important. »
The Forbush team works with Heppner’s Medicare sales team to help patients choose new plans and do so quickly.
Heppner says, more importantly, “If they don’t do anything at all, they’ll go back to original Medicare, and original Medicare has high deductibles and coinsurance, and there’s no maximum out-of-pocket amount. So it’s critical that people choose some type of plan.”
She says the number of plans is limited, so the sooner seniors act, the better.
