Miami Vice 85 First Look: Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler Filming the Reboot

Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler’s “Miami Vice ’85” reboot revealed its first look at the two stars’ characters as filming began.

Jordan is Ricardo Tubbs and Butler is Sonny Crockett in the reboot, based on the popular ’80s cop show that ran from 1984 to 1989. In the original series, Don Johnson played the role of Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas was Tubbs. Both characters are police detectives working undercover in Miami, Florida.

The “Miami Vice ’85” cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz, Edi Gathegi, Walton Goggins, Andre Holland and Michael Irby. The film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, who recently directed “F1” and “Top Gun: Maverick,” and it will arrive in theaters on May 19, 2028.

The reboot will explore “the glamor and corruption of mid-’80s Miami” and is “inspired by the pilot episode and first season of the landmark television series that influenced culture and defined the style of everything from fashion to cinema.”

Dan Gilroy wrote the screenplay, based on the characters created by Anthony Yerkovich from the television series. Eric Warren Singer wrote an earlier version of the screenplay. Dylan Clark and Kosinski are the film’s producers. Executive Vice President of Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Director of Production Development Christina Hoffrogge will oversee the project for Universal.

After winning best actor last year for “Sinners,” Jordan will next star in “The Thomas Crown Affair” alongside Adria Arjona, which he also directed. Butler’s next film is A24’s “Enemies,” starring Jeremy Allen White.
