Miami wide star receiver Malachi Toney’s status uncertain for Saturday’s top 15 match at Notre Damesources tell On3’s Brett McMurphy. The second-year forward rolled his ankle in practice Wednesday.
Sources said Toney got involved in a play with a cornerback in practice. He is undergoing additional testing Wednesday afternoon and hopes to play Saturday at Notre Dame. He’s not ruled out yet.
“Malachi Toney was injured during practice on Wednesday and is currently undergoing further evaluation by the team medical staff,” Miami told On3 and McMurphy in a statement. “We will share additional updates as appropriate.”
Toney has become one of college football’s stars over the past year. He played a pivotal role in Miami’s march to the national championship game. Nicknamed “Baby Jesus,” the 5-foot-11, 188-pound receiver currently ranks second in the nation in catches (73) and receiving touchdowns (13).
With quarterback Darian Mensah and Toney, Miami’s offense currently ranks second in the FBS, averaging 534.9 yards per game. The Hurricanes also lead the nation with 47.6 points per game.
If Toney can’t face Notre Dame, the Hurricanes could move Daylyn Upshaw or Vandrevius Jacobs to the spot.
Miami currently has a perfect 8-0 record and sits at the top of the initial College Football Playoff standings. Saturday’s game begins at 7:30 p.m. ET on NBC. The Hurricanes are coming off a 38-35 victory at North Carolina, but face their toughest test of the season in South Bend.
Notre Dame is currently a 6.5-point favorite, according to Polymarket.
