Microsoft: FSR 4.1 coming “very soon” for Xbox game developers for Series X and S

Microsoft confirms that FSR 4.1 will soon be available on Xbox Series X and Series S 1

Xbox VP Jason Ronald has confirmed that Xbox game developers will have access to FSR 4.1 support “very soon”, following AMD’s announcement yesterday that its latest generation FSR is coming to five new platforms.

This is a significant development for the Xbox platform, given that Sony has already released two versions of its PSSR machine learning upscaler for PS5 Pro and recently backported a lightweight version called QSSR to the base PS5. Now, Microsoft’s ML hardware on the Xbox Series

It’s unclear how Microsoft’s implementation of FSR 4.1 will work, but the language here suggests that it will be up to game developers to integrate the upscaling technology into their games, rather than allowing Microsoft to provide a system-level replacement that automatically upgrades older versions of FSR to FSR 4.1.

Regardless, FSR 4.1 is capable of producing better results than the older FSR 3 model, and it will be fascinating to see how it compares to the likes of FSR, Epic TSR, and Sony QSSR and PSSR in terms of game delivery.

Microsoft also worked with Asus and AMD to add support for FSR 4.1 to the Xbox Ally and Xbox Ally X handhelds, which is now available. I’m currently working on a review of the Intel-powered Acer Predator Atlas 8 handheld, and it will be interesting to compare how the Xbox Ally X with FSR 4.1 and the Atlas 8 with XeSS 3 compare in terms of image quality and performance.

What games do you think are crying out for FSR 4.1 support on Xbox Series consoles? Let me know in the comments below.
