At today’s Windows and Surface event, Microsoft showed off an upgrade to its Copilot AI system that will give it access to local files on your PC and the ability to perform actions on the operating system. It’s part of an idea Microsoft calls “Hybrid Intelligence,” in which apps and tools rely on a mix of local and cloud AI models to accomplish tasks efficiently.
To show how hybrid intelligence works, Jacob Andreou, executive vice president of Copilot at Microsoft, walked through an on-stage video demonstration asking Microsoft’s Autopilot tool to help him file his taxes. Andreou told the AI agent that he received an email from his accountant and asked Autopilot to provide what she needed. Autopilot then used Hybrid Intelligence to search through different folders to find the documents, rename the files, zip them into a folder, and compose an email to send to the accountant with the zip file attached.
Features based on hybrid intelligence will come to Copilot over the “next couple of months,” Andreou said.
Microsoft also introduced a new Windows Search experience that lets you perform quick actions from the search bar, like enable dark mode, increase your mic volume with an inline slider, or even send a text. The new experience will be available from this fall on Windows 11 PCs, according to Windows and Surface boss Pavan Davuluri.
