Microsoft offers voluntary buyout to 60,000 employees

Microsoft (MSFT) announced Monday that it is offering voluntary buyouts to about 60,000 employees in an effort to reshape its organization for the AI era.

“The voluntary separation offer reflects an important part of how we are evolving our approach to change: creating greater flexibility and, where possible, more ways for employees to shape their next chapter,” Amy Coleman, Microsoft executive vice president and chief human resources officer, wrote in a memo to employees.

The company is reportedly offering employee buyouts in Canada, India, the UK and the US at level 70 and below, which includes some senior executives.

This announcement follows Microsoft’s first voluntary retirement program, announced in May. The retirement programs offered ranged from eight to 39 weeks of base pay, depending on the position and seniority of the employees.

The staff offers come as Microsoft plans to spend $190 billion in capital spending in 2026, largely related to its investments in artificial intelligence.

All eyes will be on the Big Tech giant on Wednesday, when Microsoft reports quarterly results and provides an update on its investment plans and the growth of the Azure cloud.
