President Donald Trump spoke by phone with Politico Tuesday evening following the results of Tuesday’s midterm elections.
When asked what his message was tonight in the wake of the results, Trump responded: “I wasn’t on the ballot, and we didn’t get people out, but I wasn’t on the ballot. If I was on the ballot, we would have won.”
Senate candidate Rep. Ashley Hinson, R-Iowa, left, speaks with President Donald Trump on stage during a campaign rally Nov. 1, 2026, in Dubuque, Iowa.
Pressed for his comments urging voters to pretend to be on the ballot, Trump said voters disagreed.
“Yeah, I said, ‘Say you’re on the ballot. Think about me being on the ballot.’ But they disagreed and they didn’t like the candidates in most cases, just one of those things,” Trump added.
