The Jets were nine points ahead of the Raiders with less than nine minutes remaining in the third quarter Sunday, but the Raiders outscored them 17-3 the rest of the game to snap a four-game losing streak.
The 38-33 loss dropped the Jets to 2-6 on the season despite their offense recording a season-high 439 yards. This offense didn’t finish enough runs with touchdowns, but it was the defense that played the biggest role in the loss and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick summed it up succinctly after the game.
“A few bad penalties, bad mistakes,” Fitzpatrick said via multiple reporters. “The Jets are Jets.”
The Jets contacted the multiple media members who shared the quote to say that Fitzpatrick said “the Jets beat the Jets,” which obviates any notion that the team’s latest loss is a variation on the “same old Jets” theme that has taken hold during their long playoff drought. However, the message is the same in both cases.
The Jets defense wasted a strong offensive performance against the Raiders and was torn apart on the ground by the Dolphins in the Week 7 loss to a previously winless team. After two strong outings to start the year, the Jets have now given up an average of 26.3 points per game over the last six contests and that’s a formula for losing at the rate the Jets have lost this season.
