National Guard member shot while breaking up fight near DC’s Eastern Market – WTOP News

A National Guard member was shot in the leg while trying to break up a fight near Eastern Market on Capitol Hill Sunday evening, DC police said.

Acting Police Chief Jeffery Carroll said a group of National Guard troops intervened in a fight outside an “establishment” shortly after 11 p.m.

Police said it happened less than a block from Eastern Market, and one of the people involved in the altercation pulled out a gun and opened fire.

“Members of the National Guard immediately ordered this individual to drop his weapon,” Carroll said. “This individual then pointed his weapon at members of the National Guard, who returned fire at this individual.”

The guard was hit in the leg. The suspected shooter was also injured in the incident, police said.

Both were transported to hospitals and are expected to survive.

The suspected shooter is in custody and police said there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The shooting remains under investigation. Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact DC police at (202) 727-9099.
