Netflix just released a new series starring Josh Hartnett in which he must fight a sea creature to protect his town. And that’s good.
Netflix
We’re currently experiencing a Josh Hartnett renaissance, with the actor starring in the hated but beloved film. Truth This past weekend, Colleen Hoover’s adaptation recorded excellent box office numbers. Now Hartnett stars in Netflix’s best new show of the week, Below.
Below is a limited series starring Hartnett, Blade Runner 2049 Mackenzie Davis and Stranger Things Charlie Heaton. It has a solid 82% review score on Rotten Tomatoes, which these days can absolutely be considered a success for a Netflix original series. The concept is definitely not quite what I expected:
“When a mysterious sea creature begins to terrorize a coastal town, a fisherman must fight to protect his family and his community’s disappearing way of life.”
I haven’t seen the show yet, so I don’t know exactly what this sea creature is. I have to assume it’s not a shark and we’re not just Jaws here. A giant octopus? A giant squid? A kraken? This big starfish Suicide squad? Guess we’ll have to watch to find out.
It’s a very good cast. Hartnett has been doing well lately, appearing in the Emmy-winning film The bear and playing an important role in the Oscar-dominating film Oppenheimer. And I don’t care if no one likes Trap. I liked Trap, and he was great in it.
I’m also a big fan of Mackenzie Davis. Yes, she had a big supporting role in Blade Runnerbut above all thanks to his work in both Stop and catch fire And Station eleven, two of the best and most overlooked shows of the last 10 years. Charlie Heaton, I only know about Stranger Things and a brief tour on Industry. He’s okay, I guess.
Below was created by Jesse McKeown, who wrote a number of episodes of The Umbrella Academy, The Sinner And 19-2. Overall, it’s a good creator with a good cast and solid reviews so far. Here is a sample:
Collider – “By the time you finish your own visit to Belowyou may not be tempted to return, but you won’t regret spending a weekend there.
The edge – “Below is also surprisingly genuine and funny; anyone who has been to the East Coast will feel right at home when they see a bucket of corned beef or the dreaded scream.
It’s funny, huh? Do we make a Widows Bay here, perhaps? Well, it certainly doesn’t get that level of criticism. Some good news here is that this is a miniseries and won’t end on a cliffhanger, so don’t worry if Netflix cancels it, as it often does with new shows. I’m going to look just to see what the sea creature is.
