
Six people died in a Ukrainian missile strike in the Russian region of Belgorod, near the border, local authorities announced on Monday August 17. Also on Monday, the Ukrainian authorities deplored strikes in the Odessa region. On Sunday, strikes between the two countries claimed the lives of at least 19 people in Russia and Ukraine.
“Six civilians were killed and four injured, including a child,” the regional governor of Belgorod, Alexander Shuvaev, announced on Monday on the Max messaging service, specifying that the strike had hit the town of Koloskovo, around fifteen kilometers from the border.
Russian strikes in Izmail district
On the Ukrainian side, a Russian attack targeted port infrastructure in the Izmail district, located in the southern region of Odessa, during the night, the Ukrainian authorities announced on Monday.
The Russian Defense Ministry said its forces struck military targets at the port, which it described as “a berthing terminal used for unloading ships carrying military cargo, hangars housing Western military equipment and depots for naval drones.” Reuters could not verify the ministry’s claims.
Izmail, located near the Romanian border, is home to Ukraine’s largest port on the Danube.
In another strike, Russia said its forces hit a patrol boat and fuel tanks in Odessa.

The day before, Sunday, at least 19 people were killed in drone and missile strikes in Russia and Ukraine, which included destroying a book market in kyiv, while Moscow faced one of the most massive attacks since the start of the war.

In Russia, a wave of hundreds of Ukrainian drones caused the deaths of five people in a residential area in the southern region of Rostov, Governor Yuri Slousar reported on Telegram. Three other people were killed in the Belgorod, Kursk and Moscow regions and four more in Russian-controlled Ukrainian territories.

Moscow region governor Andrei Vorobiov called the attack “one of the most massive in recent memory.” The Russian Defense Ministry said it shot down 822 drones across the country overnight.
In Ukraine, Russian drones and missiles killed two people in an ArcelorMittal steelworks in Kryvyi Rig (center-east). This factory, which is among the largest steel producers in Ukraine, announced that it had partially suspended its activities.
Another strike on Kryvyi Rig in the evening left one person dead. Attacks also targeted other regions, killing two people in Zaporizhia (south), one in Sumy (north) and another in Donetsk (east).

The head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, announced on Monday in the German newspaper Die Welt that she wanted to increase by a third the number of Russian entities sanctioned due to the war in Ukraine.
