New York and Pennsylvania’s split-screen approach to measles

Democratic governors in Pennsylvania and New York have taken very different approaches to combating measles outbreaks in their states.

In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul calls on the Trump administration for help, while Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro tried to go it alone for months without federal help. Both are re-elected this year.

New York, which has reported around 100 cases since mid-July, declared a state of emergency on Monday, expanding the categories of medical personnel authorized to administer measles vaccines. Hochul The administration is also preparing a formal request for help from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, a spokesperson confirmed.

Pennsylvania, which has recorded more than 1,000 cases since the outbreak began in April, waited several months before seeking help from the CDC. It has not yet issued an emergency declaration.
