If you’re like us, the reveal of the Zelda 40th Anniversary Switch 2 Special Edition console last month was quickly followed by the dreaded realization of “oh no, I need that.” Sadly, for many, this need has not been met, with supply shortages making these all-important pre-orders much rarer than we would like.
In a recent interview with YouTube channel Coelho no JapĂŁo, Nintendo Vice President and General Manager for Latin America Bill van Zyll admitted that the company had “underestimated” demand for the console and reiterated that more restocks were on the way (thanks for the heads-up, GamesRadar+).
“It’s a global phenomenon; we have this problem everywhere,” van Zyll said on the YouTube channel, “we apologize for that. That was definitely not the intention.”
“We underestimated the reception it would have received,” van Zyll continued, “and there are certainly some markets that stand out” – he explicitly mentioned North America as one of those markets.
However, all is not gloomy. Nintendo has made it clear in the weeks since pre-orders went live that more product will be available eventually, and van Zyll banged the same drum in this interview. “We are working on restocking the hardware and special software, but it will take a little time,” he confirmed, before handing out Nintendo’s old chestnut: “Please be patient.”
Here in Europe, we’ve seen the system go in and out of stock at various retailers in recent weeks, and we’re sure that’s a trend that will continue as launch approaches. Considering how popular almost every SE Switch 1 console has been in the past, we’re a little surprised Nintendo isn’t expecting the same from*check notes* A gold, Zelda-themed Switch 2but hey, here we are.
