The same day as Nobody wants that was renewed for a fourth season, the cast and crew gathered to break down the third season and tease what might come next.
Stars Kristen Bell, Justine Lupe, Timothy Simons and Jackie Tohn joined co-showrunner Bruce Eric Kaplan for the FYC conversation in Los Angeles on Friday, alongside costume designer Negar Ali-Kline and music supervisor Manish Raval. Adam Brody was noticeably absent, as the crowd was told he was currently in production on a project in the UK; before the third season, Brody declared his support for a free Palestine, with which creator Erin Foster and co-star Tovah Feldshuh have both publicly disagreed. Foster and co-showrunner Jenni Konner were also not at the event.
The conversation began with a mention of the season four renewal, as Bell told the room: “I know a few things that are really exciting, but I just can’t wait to read the drafts.” Simons added that after Bell and Brody’s characters had a surprise wedding to end season three, “Personally, I’m really excited to see the families’ reaction to that because it was very romantic, they were getting married like on a lark by the ocean.”
Much of the discussion, however, was devoted to the episode in which Simons’ character, Sasha, and Lupe’s character, Morgan, travel to New York and finally act on their season-long chemistry. Simons said the two were “very flattered and very excited” to have an episode focusing solely on their characters, and “I think we approached it by saying, for lack of a better term, ‘let’s not screw this up.’

“It was a route that I don’t think any of us had ever really played before,” the actor continued. “We had to be two kinds of weirdos in a romantic comedy; I didn’t have to have super smoky eyes, I had to be a bit of a fun, mirror version of a romantic lead character.”
Simons joked that because he and Lupe were quite tall, “a lot of us are members and there’s so much elbowing,” which makes them pretty nervous about how to pull off a rom-com-worthy kiss. Lupe teased, “Bruce, like we literally came up to you and were like, ‘You don’t have to make us look bad during this kiss. Choreograph the shit; it has to be something pretty cute.'”
It seems to have worked, with the episode being a standout moment of the third season. Bell gave his full support, saying, “I think the whole New York episode is one of the best episodes of television ever made. I was standing watching the montage” and “my body was aching for them to be together.”
Lupe chimed in, “She was also live texting me and Tim about how hot Tim was.” Bell confirmed, “I was like, ‘You guys, Tim is a romantic lead.’ » I said it, everyone will know. We will need security on set next year. He’s now the lead of the show – someone needs to tell Adam that.
Nobody wants that is currently streaming on Netflix.
