NVIDIA will reportedly end production of the RTX 5090 and now introduce a new model for enthusiasts, the RTX 5080 24 GB.
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 50 range will soon benefit from major changes, the RTX 5080 24 GB replaces the RTX 5090 32 GB
The NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5090 launched in January 2025, and there have been numerous reports that the card is at the end of its life or facing production cuts, but none of them have been conclusive so far.
Well, it seems that a new set of reports are surfacing, according to which the production of GeForce RTX 5090 will soon cease to exist. According to insiders, the RTX 5090 will no longer be produced and the GB202 GPU it uses will only be provided to the RTX Pro line.
If we look at the current RTX landscape, the GB202 GPU is the flagship chip in the Blackwell lineup. On the gaming front, it’s featured on the 32GB RTX 5090, which is currently the fastest gaming graphics card on the market. On the professional level, the same chip serves three graphics cards: the 96 GB RTX PRO 6000, the 84 GB RTX PRO 5500 and the 72/48 GB RTX PRO 5000.
It’s easy to understand why NVIDIA wants to refocus its GB202 Blackwell chip on the Pro front. The RTX 5090 has already reached prices above $6,000, and that’s already a Pro-level price. DRAM prices continue to rise and demand for AI continues to grow, which could have pushed NVIDIA to refocus its current GB202 chip offering on Pro cards rather than RTX gaming cards.
The RTX PRO variants have also seen a massive price hike. This pushed many AI customers to get RTX 5090 32GB GPUs as they still offered better value for money. China and regions where these GPUs are banned are already retrofitting thousands of contraband 5090s with coolers and modified PCBs that make them viable for AI workstations and servers.
The reason this is happening despite the existence of export-capable variants like the RTX PRO 6000D and RTX 5090D V2 is because these variants come with locked features, massive AI calculation reductions, and lower memory.
NVIDIA RTX PRO “Blackwell” GPU Series:
| Graphics card | GPU cores | AI TOPS | FP32/RT calculation | VRAM | Memory bus/BW | Form factor | TDP |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| RTX PRO 6000 | 24064 (GB202) | 4000 | 125 / 380 | 96 GB GDDR7 | 512 bits / 1792 GB/s | Dual Slot/Extended | 600W |

| RTX PRO 6000D | 19968 (GB202) | To be determined | To be determined | 84 GB GDDR7 | 448 bits / 1,568 GB/s | Double slot/full | To be determined |
| RTX PRO 5500 | 21760 (GB202) | To be determined | To be determined | 84 GB GDDR7 | 416 bits / 1,398 GB/s | Double slot/full | 600W |
| RTX PRO 5000 | 14080 (GB202) | 2064 | 65 / 196 | 48-72 GB GDDR7 | 384 bits / 1,344 GB/s | Double slot/full | 300W |
| RTX PRO 4500 | 10496 (GB203) | 1687 | 50 / To be determined | 32 GB GDDR7 | 256 bits / 896 GB/s | Double slot/full | 200W |
| RTX PRO 4000 | 8960 (GB203) | 1178 | 37 / 112 | 24 GB GDDR7 | 192 bits / 672 GB/s | Single/full location | 140W |
| RTX PRO 4000 SFF | 8960 (GB203) | 770 | 24/73 | 24 GB GDDR7 | 192 bits / 432 GB/s | Double slot/half | 70W |
| RTX PRO 2000 | 4352 (GB206) | 545 | 17 / 52 | 16 GB GDDR7 | 128 bits / 288 GB/s | Double location | 70W |
We can’t say for sure if NVIDIA will completely cease production of RTX 5090 graphics cards until we get official confirmation, but we could see a period where the focus shifts from AI to gamers once things start to return to normal.
RTX 5080 24GB for gamers
NVIDIA is also reportedly preparing an alternative for gamers who wanted the RTX 5090 in the form of the RTX 5080 24GB model. Few details are available on this model at the moment, but it may feature similar specifications to the RTX 5080 “SUPER” model from a while ago. This will use 3GB GDDR7 modules instead of 2GB on the original RTX 5080 16GB.
Currently, the 16GB model costs between $1,499 and $1,999 (MSRP $999), so we expect the 24GB model to cost between $1,999 and $2,999. The RTX 5090 is much faster than the RTX 5080 but also costs 3 times more at the moment.
| Specification | RTX 5080 SUPER (rumored) | RTX5080 |
|---|---|---|
| GPU Reference | GB203-450 | GB203-400 |
| Clock Speeds | Higher (rumored) | Standard |
| VRAM | 24 GB GDDR7 | 16 GB GDDR7 |
| Memory bus | 256 bits | 256 bits |
| GDDR7 Speed | 32 Gbps | 30 Gbps |
| Memory bandwidth | 1024 GB/s | 960 GB/s |
| PAD | 415W | 360W |
All of this shows the state of gamers and the entire mainstream PC industry in the current DRAM crisis, which seems to have no end in sight.
