FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — An ICE agent is in custody at a local hospital after police say he was shot after attacking an elderly man and his daughter at a central Fresno home.
The incident happened before 3:30 a.m. Friday at a home on Dudley and Broadway.
Authorities say a woman found 32-year-old David Gonzalez sleeping on her lawn.
The woman told her 72-year-old father, who then came outside to tell Gonzalez to leave.
Once Gonzalez woke up, police say he appeared drunk and assaulted the 72-year-old man.
Police say the girl tried to intervene to protect her father and Gonzalez physically attacked her.
Fearing for their safety, officers say the 72-year-old man pulled out a gun and shot Gonzalez.
The woman’s boyfriend, who is an off-duty police officer, came to the house and handcuffed Gonzalez.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment and is listed in serious condition.
The elderly man who shot Gonzalez is not facing charges.
Gonzalez is now in custody on felony assault charges.
Authorities say he is a Texas federal agent assigned to Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Police are still investigating why he was in the neighborhood where he was ultimately shot.
Fresno City Council member Mike Karbassi released a statement on the incident, saying in part: “Enough is enough. We endured days of fearful repression that have now descended into all-out violence. I am calling on ICE to suspend its ongoing operations in the Central Valley.
