One person killed in shooting near Paris, says French Prime Minister

At least one person was killed and four others injured in a shooting near Paris, French Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said on Friday.

“The individual was arrested and taken into police custody,” he said on X.

One person was arrested and charged with four counts, including murder and possession of a firearm, with the “aggravating circumstance that the acts were committed on the basis of real or supposed membership of a specific race, ethnicity, alleged race, ethnic group, nation or religion,” the French anti-terrorism prosecution said in a statement.

The incident occurred in Trappes and La Verrière, a suburb of the Yvelines department, about 32 kilometers west of Paris, authorities said.

The mayor of Trappes, Ali Rabeh, declared on X that a man had opened fire on people from his car. An investigation is underway to determine the shooter’s motive, he added.

One of the injured people was a 12-year-old girl, he told BFM TV.

French President Emmanuel Macron said he was shocked by the events in a post on X, adding: “Our thoughts are with the victims, their families and all the inhabitants of Yvelines. In this terrible ordeal, the nation is at their side.”

“We express our gratitude to our law enforcement,” he said.
