At least one person was killed and nine injured in New York’s East Bronx when a motorist drove through a busy intersection, crashed into pedestrians and set off a chain reaction involving several vehicles, according to authorities and media reports.

The horrific collision occurred shortly after 2 p.m. in the Bronx neighborhood of Allerton, with the driver at the center of the crash reportedly saying he was trying to get around a traffic light.

Sources told the New York Post that four women, aged between 50 and 60, were crossing a crosswalk when the Mercedes hit them.

The victims were transported to Jacobi Medical Center, where one woman was pronounced dead. Two others are said to be in critical condition, while the fourth is expected to survive, according to Post sources.

The Fire Department of New York (FDNY) said emergency medical crews treated nine people following the crash, according to local news outlet News 12.

Surveillance footage obtained by News 12 showed a white Mercedes-Benz racing through the intersection, hitting a group of pedestrians in the crosswalk before crashing into several vehicles waiting at a traffic light.

According to the NYPD’s preliminary findings, the Mercedes struck two vehicles with such force that both cars were pushed into two additional vehicles.

The driver, who suffered minor injuries and remained conscious and alert, reportedly told a witness that he tried to drive around a traffic light, the Post reported.
