OpenAI is setting up an election “war room” ahead of the midterm elections, the company said exclusively. Decrypted by POLITICO.
The Election Operations Center will begin operating this week until all votes are counted, to identify the potential spread of false information or other efforts to disrupt the election. Much of this involves combating abuse of the company’s tools like ChatGPT, monitoring events in real time and reporting unexpected behavior from models or suspected violations of their platform terms.
“We have gone to great lengths to ensure we help users obtain reliable voting information, combat misuse of our tools, and support election advocates,” Josh LawsonOpenAI’s civic and strategic risk manager who runs the center, told Decoded by POLITICO. “The Election Operations Center builds on this years of work, bringing our teams together to quickly respond to emerging issues and enforce our policies as people go to the polls.
OpenAI’s move comes amid broader concerns about AI’s potential to distort next week’s midterm elections by generating misleading images, audio and video as well as spreading disinformation. The leading AI company is trying to position itself as a defender of the democratic process, even as bad actors attempt to use OpenAI’s AI tools and other tools to disrupt free and fair elections.
