Oregon school shooter identified, used shotgun bought by mother, sources say

The 16-year-old shooter who shot and killed Three children and a teacher at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, were identified Thursday as John Griffin, two law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation told CBS News. Police say he was shot and killed by a passerby at the school.

The attacker used a shotgun purchased by his mother, law enforcement sources told CBS News.

The motive for the attack was not provided. The suspect was from Bend, but police did not say whether he had a connection to the school.

Law enforcement sources told CBS News that investigators were going through his computer, phone, social media, search history and other online activity. They are investigating whether the shooter might have been obsessed with violence, including past mass shootings. The sources stressed that investigators are in the preliminary stages of their investigation.

The children killed in the shooting were ages 5, 8 and 11, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said at a news conference Thursday evening.

The victim, aged 5 was identified as Rhoam Summer, according to fundraisers and a social media post from her father.

Two other people – a 7-year-old child and a 54-year-old teacher – were hospitalized with serious injuries.

Krantz said the shooter entered the school by “shooting at locked doors.” He was pursued by a passerby, who engaged the shooter and shot him, Krantz said.

The passerby’s family released a statement Friday identify it like Kaylub Giamanco, a Bend resident with two daughters who attend Silver Rail Elementary School.

“He is not looking for recognition, but rather wishes to express his gratitude to the first responders, school staff and community for the outpouring of love and support,” the family said.

Police said they responded to 911 calls from the school within minutes and found the deceased shooter and other victims inside.
