The boss of the Ecologists and presidential candidate, Marine Tondelier, participated this Saturday morning in the climate march in Arras (Pas-de-Calais), for her first public outing since her recent childbirth, specifying that she would not return to the campaign “full time”.
“It turns out that I gave birth a week ago and if I’m here today, it’s because medically things are going well for me and for the baby (…) but that doesn’t mean that it’s a return to the campaign full time, that’s not true, that’s not possible, it’s not right to say that and make women believe that it’s possible,” she insisted.
“We’re back to square one”
She said she wanted to convey the message of “ecology and union” but also to bring “women’s subjects”, which “are not considered (as political subjects) when they should” be, such as that of reproductive and sexual health, postpartum or breastfeeding. “I think no one will dare ask me to stop” breastfeeding, said Marine Tondelier, adding that she would continue “with great pleasure” to do so “if it can help other women” who face “conflicting injunctions”.
She also recalled environmentalist proposals to support electric vehicles, believing that the surge in fuel prices is “financially strangling the French” and is part of “the same problem” as the climate crisis. “This France of Macron is going in circles, after seven years we are back to square one,” she said, alluding to the Yellow Vest movement born at the end of 2018 from a previous increase, which some would like to relaunch, and to the climate marches initiated at the same time. Marine Tondelier recalled having “missed” them after the birth of her first child.
