Raskin warns oil industry about Trump’s Russian diesel deal

Oil companies “will be held accountable” if they import barrels of Russian diesel fuel under the president’s deal. Donald Trump struck with the Kremlin, senior member of the judiciary Jamie Raskin said in a letter to industry leaders Monday.

Raskin (D-Md.), who is expected to lead the powerful Judiciary Committee if Democrats take control of the House in next week’s elections, is the latest lawmaker to warn the industry against importing or processing any Russian fuel subject to U.S. sanctions. Asset faced a wave of bipartisan criticism on his announcement earlier this month that the United States would purchase Russian diesel in an effort to lower fuel prices, which are currently $2.70 per gallon higher than a year ago.

Raskin sent the letter, a copy of which POLITICO obtained, to the heads of the industry groups American Petroleum Institute and American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers. Another copy was given to the president of the American Chamber of Commerce.

“Your members are now on notice that participating in any effort to assist the President Poutine Russian Diesel Hawking in the United States Is a Clear and Dangerous Violation of Federal Law,” Raskin wrote in the letter. “Those who choose to act in this manner proceed at their own risk and will undoubtedly be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law, whether in this administration or the next.”
