The ALCS continues Thursday afternoon, as the Tampa Bay Rays take on the Cleveland Guardians at Progressive Field.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET, with the series tied 1-1 as it moves to Cleveland. Mother Nature forced an early start for this contest due to rain forecast in the area Thursday night, giving us a rare day of ALCS baseball.

The Rays will start right-hander Griffin Jax (8-10, 3.53 ERA), who is making his first career postseason start. He made one relief appearance in two innings against the New York Yankees in the ALDS, striking out 4 while allowing 1 earned run and 1 walk on 32 pitches.
The Guardians will start right-hander Gavin Williams (14-8, 3.76 ERA), who is coming off a gem in the ALDS clincher against the Chicago White Sox, allowing just one hit while striking out 12 in 5 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Things got dicey in the sixth after he loaded the bases, but left-hander Erik Sabrowski bailed him out in relief, striking out Munetaka Murakami to strand all three runners.

Cleveland was unable to further expand its lead following Petey Halpin’s epic home run.
Brayan Rocchio was caught stealing. A José Ramírez single was sandwiched between the Guardians’ other two outs.
By the way, Ramírez already extended his hitting streak to six games earlier today. He is 2-for-2 in Game 3.

The Guardians started the bottom of the fifth inning with three straight hits, the last of which was a single by Brayan Rocchio.
This offensive wave brought an abrupt end to Griffin Jax’s day on the mound.
Rays manager Kevin Cash took the ball from Jax and fellow right-hander Tyler Wells relieved him.

Griffin Jax couldn’t handle a Patrick Bailey chopper in the sun, resulting in an infield single.
Next up was Petey Halpin, who launched a two-run homer over the right-center wall.
Halpin flipped his bat and trotted the bases after his raspy swing in the bottom of the fifth inning.
Suddenly, it’s 3-2 Goalkeepers.

Just as the Guardians sparked some activity in the bullpen, Gavin Williams resumed his batting dominance, capping the top of the fifth inning with his ninth K of the day.

Griffin Jax, who arrived without pitching more than three innings in a game since Sept. 20, has been impressive since allowing a run in the second inning.
He needed just eight pitches to get out of the fourth, with two Guardians batters swinging on the first pitch of the frame.

After Yandy Díaz’s double, Gavin Williams piled up two more strikeouts.
But with two outs, Victor Mesa Jr. drew a walk and Chandler Simpson hit a go-ahead triple.
Simpson did it with two strikes, driving the ball down the right field line and scoring two runs.
Just like that, it’s 2-1 Rays.
Williams finished the round with another punchout, her eighth of the day; however, it is no longer flawless.

Yandy Díaz sent a double to left field in the top of the fourth inning.
Steven Kwan appeared to play the ball poorly, perhaps underestimating the distance he was going to travel. It bounced and ricocheted off the left field wall, giving Díaz time to run to second base.
This is Tampa Bay’s first hit. Gavin Williams retired the first nine batters he faced. But his streak of 1-2-3 innings is over.

Sure, José Ramírez stole second, but he found himself stranded at the end of the third inning.
Nonetheless, the Guardians remain up 1-0, and they have Gavin Williams firing on all cylinders on the bump.

José Ramírez does not let himself be intimidated. Shortly after dropping a two-out single to left field in the bottom of the third inning, Ramírez stole second.
Ramírez was caught stealing in the first inning, but that didn’t stop him from sneaking a bag two innings later.

Gavin Williams is on a radiator. But he doesn’t just use his velocity to his advantage.
While he sat Richie Palacios with a 97 mph four-seam fastball, he put Taylor Walls into an 0-2 count with two straight knuckle curves. Eventually, he caught Walls looking with a sweeper.
Williams retired each of the nine batters he faced. He has as many as five strikeouts on the day.

Cleveland Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell missed the zone, but he showed some momentum on his first throw:

After hitting his RBI double, Nathaniel Lowe found himself on second with no outs, threatening to increase Cleveland’s lead.
But, even though Travis Bazzana advanced Lowe to third, Lowe found himself stranded and Rays right-hander Griffin Jax came out of the second inning with just one run allowed.
However, the Guardians are in control with a 1-0 lead.

Jo Adell took a first base on balls at the bottom of the second inning. On the next pitch, Nathaniel Lowe hit an RBI double off the right field wall.
The ball bounced off the wall, costing Rays right fielder Victor Mesa Jr. critical time.
This delay helped Adell score early.
It’s 1-0 for the Guardians.

Gavin Williams gets off to a quick start. The right-handed pitcher struck out consecutive innings to start Game 3.
In the top of the second, he needed just eight pitches to end the frame, which Williams capped with a strikeout of Liam Hicks.
Williams had Hicks swinging with a sweeper.

José Ramírez, who was on a tear for the Guardians in the postseason, drew a walk in the bottom of the first inning. But then he was caught stealing second base.
A well-placed throw from Rays catcher Liam Hicks snuffed out Ramírez’s threat on the base path.
That helped right-handed starter Griffin Jax get out of the first quickly.

Despite an earlier start time than originally planned, the Cleveland crowd is already into Game 3 at Progressive Field.
Goalie ace Gavin Williams gave them a reason to celebrate early in the first, scoring a 1-2-3 set.
Williams, a 6-foot-6 right-hander, led the AL in strikeouts this season. He collected two Ks in the first period, eliminating Jonathan Aranda and Junior Caminero.
