Real Madrid legend claims Ballon d’Or plot against Kylian Mbappé

There are sore losers, and then there are Real Madrid legends.

Speaking to Spanish television show El Chiringuito (of “Tic Tac” fame), Gutí claimed that Harry Kane’s Ballon d’Or victory was orchestrated by France Football as a snub to Kylian Mbappé.

“It turns out that for the 70th anniversary they move the ceremony to London and someone from London wins it,” he told El Chiringuito (via @iMiaSanMia). “It’s an incredible coincidence that they move it to London and someone from London wins it, right? I mean, it’s like everything is…”

“Orchestrated,” the interviewer said.

“Absolutely. Absolutely. That’s what I think, and that’s what I’ve thought for a long time about this award. I tell you, when I saw his face when Harry Kane was announced, he never thought in his life that he was going to win it. Never. I think he expected Lamine Yamal and Mbappé to finish ahead of him. Just look at his face,” Gutí said.

Today, to most sane football fans, this seems unbalanced, especially because it is obvious that no one knew in advance who won. When Lamine Yamal and Kylian Mbappé saw Harry Kane stand up and collect his Ballon d’Or, their reactions were genuine, and they both seemed to think they were going to win it (until they didn’t).

The fact is that Real Madrid are so used to getting what they want that when they are treated fairly, they act as if an injustice has been done to them. It was the same with Eduardo Camavinga’s red card in the Champions League semi-final last season. Harry Kane deserved his Ballon d’Or; there is no conspiracy about it. The fact that they can’t accept it is just pathetic and irritable.
