Shawn Horcoff summed up where the Detroit Red Wings stand with Dylan Larkin.
“Dylan doesn’t want to be a Red Wing anymore and he’s not with us,” the Wings’ interim general manager said Thursday (October 29). “That’s a pretty strong statement.”
Larkin’s agent, Pat Brisson, told the team that Larkin “had enough” since six months had passed since he requested a trade. Larkin no longer wants to report to the team, leading the Wings to suspend him – costing him $41,237.11 per day. Larkin is in the fourth year of an eight-year contract worth an annual average of $8.7 million.
Larkin has a no-trade clause, which complicates the situation. Its most recent list includes 10 teams: the Florida Panthers, Minnesota Wild, Vegas Golden Knights, Dallas Stars, Washington Capitals, Carolina Hurricanes, Utah Mammoth, Tampa Bay Lightning, New Jersey Devils and Colorado Avalanche.

“We’ve talked to other teams and gotten calls from other teams around the league who have expressed interest in Dylan, and we just continue to try to find a solution that works for both parties,” Horcoff said. “You know, we have to be sensitive to Dylan and his situation, and understand what he wants in this relationship.
“But at the same time, you know, responsibility to our players in the locker room, the other 22 guys in the locker room, the coaching staff, the management, the fans, to also do what’s right for the organization.”
Here’s what Horcoff had to say on Thursday:
On commercial negotiations
The Wings are light on center depth and view Larkin as a valuable asset. Preferably, they want value-added players in return.
“I think the goal is to have players that can help us immediately, but at the same time the vision and the ultimate goal is the long-term success of the organization.
“I’m open to all kinds of deals, and really, we’re just trying to find something that’s fair for a return for someone of Dylan’s caliber. He’s a heck of a player with a good contract, and that’s important to us. With Dylan, you know, he signed a long-term contract with the Detroit Red Wings, and we in turn showed a commitment to him. And when that happens, he becomes an important part of your long-term plans. And when you pull out someone like It’s getting hard to replace. So I think it’s important for me to be open to all areas, whether it’s prospects, picks and players. But I’m doing my best to try to help this group that we have here now.
On Simon Edvinsson
Larkin’s trade demand seems all-consuming, but Horcoff is also trying to sign Simon Edvinsson, a restricted free agent defenseman.
“It’s status quo for Simon compared to last time,” Horcoff said. “There’s nothing changed there. We’re still trying to do something with Simon.”
Edvinsson and the Red Wings face Dec. 1 deadline; If the young Swede has still not signed, he will have to sit out the 2026-2027 NHL season.
Things are in the room
“It’s pretty raw,” Horcoff said. “I think everyone needs time in the locker room to digest this.”
