Report: Andy Reid and Patrick Mahomes told Josh Simmons to leave a team meeting

Chiefs left tackle Josh Simmons, who has not played this season and was placed on injured reserve Thursday, was told to leave a team meeting Wednesday by head coach Andy Reid and quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

The incident started with Simmons seated, feet raised and Reid asking him to put his feet down, according to ESPN. Simmons said he was sitting that way because of his back injury, and Reid told him that if he couldn’t sit up straight, he should go get treatment from the training staff. As Simmons and Reid went back and forth, Mahomes told Simmons he should leave and stop disrupting the meeting. Simmons did it.

Simmons later apologized to Reid and the team leaders, according to the report.

Regarding Wednesday’s injury report, the Chiefs said Simmons did not practice due to “back/non-personal injury injuries,” which could suggest his absence from practice was a combination of his back injury and the dispute he had with Reid, although Chiefs vice president of sports medicine and performance Rick Burkholder said the personal reason Simmons missed practice was because the team was giving him time to talk to his family and his agents on how to proceed with his back injury.

The Chiefs made Simmons their first-round pick last year in hopes he could protect Mahomes’ blindside for years to come. But so far, Simmons has only played eight games and missed 14 of them.

Simmons hasn’t practiced since August. The earliest he could play would be the Chiefs’ Week 11 game against the Cardinals.
