Chinese tech platform Channel Gate reports that Nvidia will soon upgrade from 6GB to 24GB models for the RTX 5080, following reports earlier in the month that the RTX 5090 had indeed been discontinued – information that Nvidia has since strongly denied. Interestingly, the RTX 5080 24GB could arrive in some markets as early as December of this year and effectively become the best GeForce GPU offering in a world where RTX 5090 cards are unaffordable and/or in extremely limited supply.
According to the ChannelGate report, the RTX 5080 16GB and RTX 5090 D V2 will no longer be supplied to Chinese retailers. The country currently has about a two-month supply of 16GB RTX 5080 units, so by December that supply should be essentially exhausted, which will perfectly reserve the arrival of the new 24GB cards – which use the new 3GB GDDR7 memory modules that were previously expected to form the basis of a new RTX 50-Series Super line.
The timeline here is still in flux, with Channel Gate’s report suggesting that December is the earliest possible date for the 24GB RTX 5080 to launch, while a more conservative timeline would see the new GPU variant arrive in January 2027 instead.
Normally, the Chinese market precedes the global GPU market by a few weeks at most, so the RTX 5080 24GB is expected to arrive globally in a broadly similar time frame rather than remaining a China-exclusive product.
As of now, this report doesn’t provide any concrete evidence to support its claims, but with January just two months away, we don’t have too long to wait to see if they bear fruit.
