U.S. warehouse supply collides head-on with rise of AI, warns Ross Perot Jr. The Hillwood chairman, son of former presidential candidate Ross Perot, said the U.S. now has only 15 to 20 empty warehouses of at least 1 million square feet that can handle AI data center equipment, compared to the more typical 50, Bloomberg reports, via Quartz. In North Texas, where Hillwood is developing its AllianceTexas Data Center Campus, Perot has just one.
A report from JLL confirms this trend: The vacancy rate at these Class A mega-facilities fell to 5.4% in the third quarter, from 9.5% the year before, even as 317 million square feet are under construction. Building data centers costs around $85 billion per year. Perot likened the sudden political backlash over their environmental impact to the fight against fracking, arguing that cities should weigh the heavy tax revenue they generate. “They can generate huge revenue for the city and the state, if they are done well and involve neighbors,” Perot said earlier this month, according to the newspaper. Waco Tribune-Herald.
