Happy Halloween! Today, as people around the world dress up as ghosts, witches, vampires or their favorite pop stars, the royal family celebrated the spooky holiday with a sweet fall throwback. On Instagram, Prince William and Princess Kate shared a photo of one-year-old Prince Louis from their personal archives.

Photographed by Kate herself, the image showed the youngest Welsh child, now aged eight, with a pumpkin, perhaps about to try to pick it up. The toddler was wrapped in a blue coat, layered with a blue and white plaid shirt. His red boots were muddy from a day outside and his cheeks were pink from the cold. (And although he was known for his sassy facial expressions, here he was all smiles.)

The Prince and Princess have long prioritized a life surrounded by nature, often raising awareness of the positive impacts of time spent outdoors and how we can help protect the environment for future generations. Just last week, on Mountain Rescue Awareness Day, the couple posted a photo of the whole family at the base of the Three Peaks Challenge, one of the UK’s toughest outdoor endurance events, in which participants climb the highest mountains in Scotland, England and Wales in 24 hours. Kate took on the challenge last June to raise money for the Royal Marsden Cancer Charity and revisited the milestone to thank local mountain rescue teams “for the vital role they play in keeping mountain walkers and climbers safe all year round”.
