CANBERRA — A fight has broken out within Australia’s diplomatic community.
The wives of the Ukrainian, Italian and Estonian ambassadors to Australia have resigned from the Women’s International Club of Canberra after it admitted Irina Petrakovawife of the Russian ambassador.
President of WIC Sandie Kaine said the club admitted Petrakova after receiving legal advice that refusing membership based on country of origin would be a breach of discrimination law.
Liana Myroshnychenkowife of the Ukrainian ambassador, said in an email to club members that her objection was to by Petrakova role of representative of Russia, and not its nationality.
