Do you have a computer, phone or tablet with memory chips inside? It’s a shame. You shouldn’t do this.
At least not according to OpenAI’s Sam Altman, who shared his views on the widespread lack of memory in an interview on the Cheeky Pint and Stripe YouTube channel.
The entire interview is an interesting listen if you like AI, but the fun part starts around 29:20 in the video. “From a global allocation perspective, it’s actually pretty terrible to see everyone having some of the limited global supply of DRAM in their own computer,” Altman said without batting an eyelid.
Crushable speed of light
It’s true that Altman was making a broader point, and he spoke after a few pints of beer, but the comment remains quite brazen at a time when everyone who buys any type of electronic device using RAM is facing higher prices, precisely because big companies’ thirst for AI computing is sucking up all the RAM chips in the world.
The Internet, of course, had something to say about Altman’s seemingly endless thirst for DRAM chips. The sentiment is clear: stay away from our domestic machines, Altman. We paid a premium price for a measly 16GB of RAM.
