Two retired San Francisco police officers and their adult daughter were killed Sunday evening in a murder-suicide at their Marin County home, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
Kevin Mannix, 68, a retired San Francisco police sergeant, fatally shot his estranged wife, retired SFPD Deputy Chief Ann Mannix, 65, and their youngest daughter, Katie, 24, before killing himself, according to sources.
The Mannixes’ deaths were announced to San Francisco police officers Sunday evening by Chief Derrick Lew, who wrote in a department-wide message that the agency shared the news “with a heavy heart.”
“Please keep their family in your prayers,” Lew wrote.
The Marin County Sheriff’s Office has not released the identities of the three people or revealed what led to the shooting.
The sheriff’s office received a 911 call at 5:03 p.m. reporting shots fired inside a residence on Strawberry Circle in Mill Valley, according to a news release from the department.
Officers arrived a few minutes later and contacted the person who made the call, who had safely left the home, the sheriff’s office said. Police secured a perimeter and entered the residence, where they found three people dead.
Detectives with the sheriff’s office’s investigative unit were investigating the scene Sunday evening.
“There is no known threat to the community,” the sheriff’s office said.
Ann Mannix rose through the SFPD ranks to become deputy chief of the field operations bureau in 2018 and was tasked with overseeing the special operations bureau the following year, department records show. She also became the first woman to join and then lead the department’s SWAT team.
Kevin Mannix retired from the department in June 2018 after 27 years of service.
In a farewell message published by Taraval Station in July, Mannix discussed the relationships he made during his career and his plans to spend more time with family and friends.
“I am leaving the SFPD, but I am taking your friendships with me forever,” Mannix wrote.
Lew’s message to department staff Sunday also noted that the department’s behavioral sciences unit was available to members who needed support.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation is in its very early stages and will provide additional information as it becomes available.
