SAN JOSE, California. – Editor’s note: Please note that the details in this story involve alleged sexual assault of a minor. Details may disturb readers.
The San Jose Police Department said a Fremont man was arrested last week for sexually assaulting a teenager on a high school campus, and allegedly recorded the assault on his cellphone.
High school sports coach arrested
Police said Kelvin Chiu, 31, of Fremont, raped a 16-year-old girl he was caring for for a sports-related injury.
On October 8, around 7:30 p.m., officers responded to a report of a sexual assault at a high school in the 5000 block of Mitty Way. Although police did not name the high school, maps show a high school down the street, Archbishop Mitty High School, a private Catholic school.
The assault victim told police that Chiu, a sports coach at the school, sexually beat her and recorded it on his phone.
A police Crimes Against Children Task Force obtained a search warrant for the suspect’s home and car.
On October 9, Chiu was located in Fremont and taken into custody. Police said child pornography was found on the suspect’s phone.
Chiu was booked into the Santa Clara County Main Jail on charges of annoying or assaulting a minor and sexual assault, as well as producing and possessing child sexual abuse material.
Police say there could be other victims
SJPD says the school administration has been informed and is fully cooperating with its investigation. However, due to Chiu’s position of trust, they believe there could be more victims.
The Diocese of San Jose responded to our request for a statement. They confirmed that Chiu was a member of the athletic training team and that the victim’s family had notified the school that evening. They said Chiu was immediately placed on administrative leave and will not be on campus.
“Our first concern is with the student and his or her family, as well as all of our students and families. We recognize the impact that a situation of this nature can have on our students, and the school’s counseling teams will be available to speak with students who may need additional support,” Cynthia Shaw, director of communications for the diocese, wrote in a statement.
Additionally, the diocese encouraged all potential victim-survivors to come forward to report historical or ongoing inappropriate conduct.
