A superyacht longer than a basketball court, with a swimming pool that stretches half its length, appears to be a vacation destination for North Korean leader Kim Jong Un. A BBC analysis of satellite images shows a 260-foot luxury vessel shuttling between a shipyard and the waters off North Korea’s Kalma Peninsula, near the Wonsan villa where Kim and his family are staying, from July to mid-October. Three other large boats, as well as smaller support craft, surfaced several times in the same area.
Defectors and experts say ships of this size are effectively off-limits to anyone outside the ruling class. The images suggest seaside leisure for those at the top in a country where around 40% of the population is undernourished, travel is tightly controlled and many workers struggle to use vacation days to which they are entitled on paper. The yacht also has several water slides.
