Several people, including children, were injured in a shooting Thursday at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, police confirmed at a news conference.
At least two people were hospitalized and the suspected shooter died, according to Bend police spokeswoman Sheila Miller.
Police responded to Silver Rail Elementary School at 1:02 p.m. after receiving reports of shots fired at a car outside.
By the time officers arrived on scene, the alleged attacker had been shot inside the school building. It is unclear who shot the suspect.
The identity of the shooter also remains unknown.
The full range of victims and their conditions was not immediately clear Thursday afternoon. Authorities also have not confirmed the identities or ages of the victims, beyond their initial statement about the injured children.
“This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend. It’s devastating,” Miller said.
Emergency services were working to evacuate the primary school, which has around 400 students enrolled, room by room.
The shooting appears to have started about an hour before the end of the school day.
Oregon Governor Tina Kotek said on social media that she was monitoring the situation. The FBI is helping local authorities investigate the shooting, according to agency director Kash Patel.
