Several people, including children, were injured and a shooter died after gunfire broke out Thursday at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon, police said.
The shooter had already been shot and killed inside the school when police arrived on the scene around 1 p.m., said Sheila Miller, a spokeswoman for the Bend Police Department. It’s not yet clear who killed the shooter, but it “could have been a bystander,” Miller said, citing the ongoing investigation.
Medics transported at least two people to the hospital, police said.
Silver Rail Elementary School was closed and the Bend Police Department set up a reunification point for students’ families.
A large crowd of concerned parents and community members gathered outside the school Thursday afternoon awaiting updates on the situation. A large response of police and emergency personnel was deployed, including police vehicles, ambulances and a fire engine.
This is a developing story and will be updated.
