Sharon Horgan returns as literary agent Alex after HBO renewal Youth for a second season.
The news comes less than 24 hours after the season one finale.
Youth follows a 50-year-old divorcee’s search for sex and love while juggling caring for her ailing parents and raising her expected-to-be-adult son.
Horgan plays Alex in the series she created and wrote. (SPOILER ALERT) The eight-part season was left open after Alex ended it with Patrick, played by Rupert Friend after discovering a list of pros and cons, with the inability to have children as in this last column. However, after a one-night stand with her nemesis Malcolm, played by Douglas Hodge, she wakes up to find that her boss Sam, played by Sharlene Whyte, has signed Malcolm. All this while dealing with a urinary infection and trying to resolve issues with her child Ruari, played by Aran Murphy. Robbie Gee also plays the role of Frank, Sam’s husband.
Youth is produced by Horgan’s Merman and she executive produces alongside Faye Dorn, Jim Kleverweis and Dawn Shadforth, who also directs.
Youth comes seven years after Horgan’s last HBO show, Divorceended after three seasons. Disaster co-creator Horgan is also behind Apple’s dark comedy Bad sistersCourteney Cox of Starz in front Shining Valley and BBC comedy Country.
“I’m so happy to have another opportunity to experience my emotional and biological crises on HBO. I can’t think of a better platform to air my UTI issues. The response to Youth was beyond what I could have hoped for. I am so grateful for the response and the chance to work with this incredible cast and creative team again,” Horgan said.
Amy Gravitt, executive vice president of HBO programming and head of HBO comedy series and HBO Max, added: “In a way that only she can, Sharon has created a show that makes us howl with laughter and tears – often at the same time. Every performance in Youth is more delicious than the next one. Along with our partners at Merman, we are thrilled to have this brilliant ensemble back for another season.
