Skydance & The Warner Bros: films ready, in preparation or on fire

The heads that wear the crowns hang heavily, and that goes for Skydance Pictures co-presidents Dana Goldberg and Josh Greenstein, who will be tasked with getting under the hood and sorting out the upcoming Warner Bros. theatrical slates. 2027-2029.

The first fire to put out: ensure that Barbie2 becomes a reality with its original franchise director Greta Gerwig and leads Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling. There are other projects to look at as well, read the Jonah Hill-directed comedy that has reportedly been completed. The cut which was initially dated The Odyssey this year and then without date. What is going on with this movie?

One of the next big auteur projects greenlit by the previous regime was director Baz Luhrmann’s next project Joan of Arc. The director is currently awaiting a new draft of the script in hopes of a spring start.

Although we have told you about the dated titles that Warners is delivering to the new Skydance, some of them are in various forms of production and development, read: the New Line dated September 8, 2028. Weapons prequel, Gladys. This is awaiting a final version before attaching a director.

Going back to Hollywood’s desert days, it is critical for any new administration to review the choices of previous regimes and determine whether there are still horses worth backing. This continued when Michael De Luca and Pam Abdy arrived at Warner Bros. in June 2022 (the plan Bat girl was put aside, while WBD CEO David Zaslav wrote and sold Coyote vs. Acme) and that happened when Goldberg and Greenstein arrived at Paramount in late summer 2025 (read: one of the most prolific projects from the previous Brian Robbins regime that didn’t get the green light was the R-Rated Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Last Ronin. In return, a new live-action featurette of sword-wielding reptiles is in the works aimed at families).

And despite the recent bomb that is Warners’ $160 million Tom Cruise political satire, Excavator, Skydance co-CEO David Ellison says he’s not anti-big swing. At Tuesday’s Day One Skydance press conference, he reminded everyone that Sinners was his favorite movie of last year.

In addition to franchises, “we’re going to create a completely diverse roster,” Ellison said. “One of the things I really believe in is original storytelling.”

“One of the areas to be very careful about is doing anything that compromises the quality of those images, and anything that might compromise the quality of marketing campaigns,” said Ellison, who believes there is a way for this two-headed monster to win, particularly pro forma content spending of more than $30 billion a year, despite the burden of $79 billion in net debt.

Those are hard numbers for some financial analysts to understand, but Ellison and his new co-CEO Ynon Kriez want to prove to the city that their merger anomaly can actually keep the two former studios alive and growing their products while paying down debt. If co-financing is always a solution, particularly for risky bets, it remains to be seen whether the new Paramount-Warner Bros. sometimes chooses the easy way. How so ? Rather than risk a $300 million gamble in production costs and marketing, will they simply accept the stage AG penalties and fork out $30 million for any film they are unable to deliver in a 30-picture slate? It is a cheaper alternative.

Ellison also pointed out yesterday that when he took the reins at Paramount a year ago, they topped synergies with $2.7 billion while doubling the slate to 15 films a year and greenlighting four new series.

For those who feared the consolidation of the two historic studios, what should be a balm is that with Warner Bros operating separately from Paramount Pictures under the leadership of Jesse Ehrman and Mike Ireland, the two studios will be able to compete on projects respectively.

“But there will be coordination,” Kriez emphasized in this regard.

He explained: “The plan is to keep the studios independent creatively, so everyone has their own slate, their own relationship, the same opportunities, and then we will choreograph the release schedule and optimize it by genre and audience demographic to get the best for society as a whole.” »

Although we told you what was dated before, below is a sample based on our previous reports on the kit and caboodle coming to Goldberg and Greenstein. We’ve looked at what’s ready and real on the 2027 and 2028 lists. Excluded from this list are a myriad of informed acquisitions made under the previous regime of De Luca and Abdy.
