Sony offers to buy users PS5 consoles for up to $400

Sony is offering $400 to people ready to part with their PS5 and two controllers.

As spotted by ResetEra user Jay_Horror, PlayStation sends notifications to fans who have the PlayStation app on their phone. The notification tells users that they can trade in their console for Sony and receive money directly into their bank account. This deal is worth up to $400 for anyone with a standard PS5 and two controllers. While redemption programs, especially during the holiday season, aren’t uncommon for retailers like GameStop, it’s not as normal to see platform holders going directly to customers like this.

This may suggest that Sony is preparing for a hardware shortage or is interested in used inventory that it can sell at a more affordable price than a brand new device. PlayStation 5 consoles currently cost between $600 and $650, depending on whether you have a disc drive or not. If you want the most premium PS5 Pro console, it will cost you $900. However, due to the demand for the Pro before the release of GTA 6, it has been difficult to get one at retail price. As a result, resellers and even retailers like GameStop are selling used PS5 Pros for up to $1,400.

If you bought a PS5 before prices started going up and you’re not using it, it’s not a bad deal. Given that the console originally cost $500, getting $400 back (provided you also acquired an additional controller at some point) is solid trade-in value. At this point in the PS4’s lifecycle, you wouldn’t have gotten nearly $400 at a retailer like GameStop.
