THE Monthly electronic game the return delivered a truly frightening rumor. According to the new issue of the legendary EGM Quatermann column, Lucasfilm goes shopping Star Wars Battlefront 3and the pioneers to achieve this are DICE EA and, surprisingly, Bungie.
The rumor was spotted by Jeff Grubb of Giant Bombwho read the entire passage from his latest podcast. Here is what the Quartermann wrote in EGM #265:
Others also tell the Q that Disney has big plans for the Star Wars Battlefront series. Recognizing how EA’s Battlefront 2 has maintained a popularity that other Star Wars media can only dream of, like Mandalorian and Grogu, you’d think they’d greenlight Battlefront 3 right away. And you would be wrong. From what your intrepid Rumor has dug up, the Lucasfilm suits have been aggressively deploying probe droids for a development partner to create a follow-up. So far, no one has fully responded, but you know two major game studios are circling the project like two snowspeeders, led by, unsurprisingly, EA DICE, who we can hope have learned from their loot box lesson. Uh. We can look forward to that one. Here’s the other one: There’s another one. The Quartermann learns that if the Force is not entrusted to DICE, it could end up with none other than Bungie, developer of Halo, Destiny and Marathon.
Grubb was encouraged by the idea of a new Battlefront, but shared his healthy skepticism about the Bungie part:
I have to say I’m encouraged by this idea that, okay, they seem to want to pursue a new Star Wars Battlefront, and why wouldn’t they? Except they’re not there yet, which I think has been frustrating for a lot of fans, but wake up and smell a little coffee there. It’s time to make another one. And okay, yes, EA DICE is doing another one seems like a no-brainer if you can make sense of that, but I bet they have a bad taste in their mouth from working with EA for a very long time. They are therefore looking for other partners. But Bungie…I don’t think they’ll make Star Wars Battlefront 3. I think it’ll go to DICE.
He did, however, acknowledge Bungie’s credentials as a shooter, before pointing out what the rumor mill says about the industry as a whole:
I think Bungie could do a good job with this game. Their gunplay would be fantastic and they would do everything right, but it’s almost like that’s not the point of talking about this story. It speaks to so many things, especially at Bungie, but in the industry in general. There was a time, just five years ago, when the conventional wisdom at the helm of many of these companies was: It takes a lot of money to create new intellectual property. Although we enjoy the benefits of owning it, it is much more efficient to buy something, rent it and use that intellectual property. And it changed very quickly. And I bet the lesson learned is: we don’t know, actually. We just have to do what is safest at the moment. And it doesn’t necessarily feel like Bungie’s Star Wars Battlefront 3.

The Quartermann is certainly right about The sustainability of Battlefront 2. Although it hasn’t received any content updates in years, the game has seen a remarkable resurgence in the last yearthe number of concurrent players on Steam increasing from around 1,000 to 1,500 in April 2025, then to an all-time high of 35,892 in June 2025, thanks to a $4 sale. It grew further in May, when the average number of Steam players more than doubled to over 3,300 and peaked above 9,000. And according to the team behind the community project Kyber Launcherthe game peaked at over 122,000 concurrent players across all platforms earlier in May.
Yet there’s still no Star Wars Battlefront 3. EA’s exclusive Star Wars license, which led DICE to reboot the series with 2015’s Star Wars Battlefront and 2017’s Battlefront 2, has since given way to Lucasfilm working with multiple publishers, which is why the company would be free to shop the project around. DICE, the developer of both modern Battlefront games, is the obvious candidate, especially since the studio is in great shape after Battlefield 6. Bungie, on the other hand, would be a really strange choice.
On the one hand, Bungie is owned by Sonyso a Bungie-made Battlefront 3 would mean a first-party PlayStation studio developing a major licensed Star Wars shooter. On the other hand, the studio’s plate is already full. Bungie’s new management recently admitted that the studio had lost the trust of players and had blocked its own ambitionsand outlined a plan to restore Destiny 2’s vault contents and scale Marathon after it failed to reach as many players as hoped. Tackling Star Wars Battlefront 3 would be a big turning point for a studio that just told its community it was simplifying its priorities. It would also be a betrayal of the Destiny fanbase, who would certainly prefer that Destiny 3 be done instead.
As always, take this one with a grain of salt. The Quartermann has always been as much a gossip column as a news source, and even Grubb, who found the rumor encouraging, isn’t really buying into the Bungie angle. Additionally, some members of DICE are already excited about the idea of this long-awaited sequel.
