EXCLUSIVE: As director Matt Reeves continues to deal with an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh comes in to help finish principal photography in the final weeks of the DC Studios film. The Batman Part II. The news comes after production on the film was halted so Reeves could focus on his personal matters.
Soderbergh is a long-time admirer of Reeves’ work, and since Reeves couldn’t be on set, the Oscar-winning director offered to help him finish principal photography on the film. Although Reeves cannot be on set, the two will work together and remain in communication until filming is complete, with Reeves taking over post-production duties when he is ready to return.
The studio released a statement regarding Soderbergh joining the production:
“As Matt Reeves continues to deal with an ongoing family matter, Steven Soderbergh, as an admirer of Matt’s work, has contacted Matt and will step in, with the full support of DC Studios, to help the writer-director complete the final weeks of principal photography on The Batman Part 2. Matt and Steven will work closely with the cast and crew to realize Matt’s film vision.
Soderbergh also released a statement:
“I thought Matt Reeves’ work on The Batman was magnificent; it was intentional, specific and rigorously consistent. The goal here is to work with Matt and his team to generate footage that will fit seamlessly into what has already been shot so that Matt can properly complete his film.
Deadline first reported earlier this month that production would be put on hold while Reeves attended to a family matter. Before the break, filming was underway in London. The film is scheduled to be released on February 18, 2028. Sources say it is too early to say whether the shutdown will have an effect on the release date.
The cast includes Robert Pattinson, Andy Serkis and Colin Farrell returning as Batman, Alfred and Penguin respectively, with new additions Scarlett Johansson, Sebastian Stan, Brian Tyree Henry, Jayme Lawson, Charles Dance, Gil Perez-Abraham and Sebastian Koch.
