Big banks JPMorgan, Goldman Sachs, Citi Group And Wells Fargo are expected to release their results before Tuesday’s open. Member of the Dow Jones UnitedHealth is also on deck.
The early reports could set the tone for an earnings season of high expectations. Analysts on average expect S&P 500 earnings to rise nearly 30% from the year-ago period, according to FactSet.
“Three groups will likely shape how investors interpret the season: 1) banks (consumer and business health), 2) big tech (AI monetization), and 3) energy (sustainability of oil profits),” wrote Anthony Saglimbene, chief market strategist at Ameriprise. “In these areas, the health of consumers and businesses amid higher interest rates, high costs and concerns about the macroeconomic environment will be closely monitored across all sectors throughout the season.”
On Tuesday, investors will also analyze existing home sales figures as well as comments from Federal Reserve officials Christopher Waller, Tom Barkin and Susan Collins.
Later in the week, inflation data for September will be released – which could send Treasury yields higher after recently hitting multi-decade highs. The US bond market was closed on Monday due to Indigenous Peoples Day.
Wall Street is coming out of a mixed session. THE Dow ended Monday up more than 195 points, while falling memory stocks pushed the Nasdaq Composite And S&P500 in negative territory for the day.
