Amy Klobuchar won the election for governor of Minnesota. She will be the state’s next governor and a new person will be chosen to fill the U.S. Senate seat she is leaving behind.
Since the elections, the list of potential candidates has grown. Here’s what we heard from the MPR News audience, but who do you want? Vote on who interests you or submit the name of the person you would like to see nominated.
How is Klobuchar’s seat filled?
When a U.S. Senate seat becomes vacant, the governor of Minnesota appoints a temporary senator until a special election can be held, according to state law. Whether current Gov. Tim Walz or Klobuchar is nominated will depend on when Klobuchar resigns his seat. Klobuchar will be sworn in as governor on January 4.
Walz could signal his choice between now and Klobuchar’s inauguration, but he can also delay that nomination to Klobuchar once she is inaugurated. In turn, Klobuchar may also wait until just before his inauguration to resign from the Senate.
Klobuchar’s nomination of someone to fill his own Senate seat could be his first act as governor.
