Taika Waititi calls ‘Klara and the Sun’ criticism ‘irrelevant’

Taika Waititi took to social media to defend “Klara and the Sun,” his latest directorial effort, amid lackluster reviews and dismal box office numbers, sharing an Instagram post showcasing the film’s poster and its 78 percent Rotten Tomatoes audience score. (On the other hand, the critical score is 28%, the lowest ever obtained by the director of “Jojo Rabbit”).

“I haven’t read a review of anything aimed at me or my peers in almost 15 years. But I listen to people,” Waititi wrote in his caption. “So this Halloween, let’s spare a thought for those sad lost souls who couldn’t realize their dream of becoming artists and thus became critics. The same people who also hated Jojo Rabbit. Irrelevant. Out of touch. Obsolete. In the trash.”

In its theatrical debut last weekend, “Klara and the Sun” landed in 15th place with just $720,000 from 880 locations, and Sony scaled back its theatrical footprint after critics called the film “calamitous” and a “tense, gimmicky comedy that’s ruinous.”

Jenna Ortega, who plays the film’s titular android, also recently revealed in a Vogue interview that she doesn’t read reviews of her films because “it would send me into a kind of psychosis” and doesn’t check box office updates when her team sends them to her because “I don’t want it to become about numbers.”

Based on the 2021 novel by Kazuo Ishiguro, “Klara and the Sun” is set in a dystopian future as an obsolete android companion (Ortega) attempts to bond with her new owner, a sickly young girl named Josie.
