Teen charged in Florida A&M shooting that injured 11 people after football game

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A 15-year-old will be charged as an adult in a weekend shoot who injured 11 people at Florida A&M University after the school’s homecoming football game, authorities said Monday.

A fight broke out before Saturday night’s shooting and it appears none of the victims were intended targets, according to Tallahassee police. The youngest victim is 11 years old.

Authorities arrested Anthony Rivers III on Sunday and charged him with attempted second-degree murder and possession of a firearm by a delinquent, police said in a news release. Court records do not indicate whether Rivers has an attorney who could comment on the charges.

The teen appeared in court Monday for a brief hearing, during which a judge ordered him to remain in jail. Prosecutors will take the case to adult court, prosecutor Jack Campbell said.

A surveillance camera captured part of the shooting, Campbell said, but he said investigators are seeking more video and want to speak with witnesses to piece together what happened.

The shooting broke out near a street corner just outside Bragg Memorial Stadium after Florida A&M’s loss to Arkansas-Pine Bluff. Eleven people were hit by gunfire and another person – the grandmother of one of the shooting victims – was injured while fleeing. Six of the injured were minors, police said.

Police Chief Lawrence Revell said the area was so crowded at the time that ambulances were unable to get to where the shooting occurred.

Police officers carried the injured through the crowd to emergency vehicles so the victims could be transported to hospitals, he said.

The shooting stemmed from an isolated argument between just a few people, Revell said. Investigators are looking for other people who may have been involved and more arrests are possible, he said.

At least three of the victims were seriously injured, authorities said. One was in critical condition Sunday, police said, but no further information was released on the injured.

A video of people fleeing terror has surfaced on social media. The area was filled with people leaving the game and celebrating going home.
