Terrifying moment woman intervenes in bush fight between koala and python

A Queensland woman came across a confrontational scene while walking her dog in the bush.

The commotion caught Nell’s attention and when she went to investigate, she found a baby koala in distress.

A python had wrapped itself around the baby animal, strangling it, while its mother tried to save its life.

“The poor mother was clawing at the python, trying to free her baby. The little one looked straight at me and I saw the panic on her face,” Nell told news.com.au.

“I didn’t really think at the time; I just threw my phone on the ground and started separating the two. I didn’t know how long it was stuck, and there is a short window to act before a python can cause injuries such as broken bones, organ damage, or lack of oxygen.”

With her dog attached to her, she untangled the python dramatically, safely separating the two.

Eventually, she managed to free the baby and reunite him with his panicked mother, before they ran into a tree for a much-needed cuddle.

“I’m glad it was a happy ending; seeing Joey and Mom cuddling was pure joy,” she recalls.

The snake also remained unharmed in the chaos.

“He’s not the bad guy; he was just an opportunist in a fragmented environment,” she said.

When she shared the footage of this frightening encounter, she did so in hopes of raising awareness about conservation.

“The conservation of all native species is important to me. I have witnessed so much wildlife trauma and habitat destruction over my many years working with native animals; it’s something you don’t forget,” she explained.

“Not only is the government not doing enough to protect them, it’s also contributing to it. Australia has the highest extinction rate in the world. It’s up to us to do something before we lose more species.”

The video was viewed millions of times, with thousands of comments praising Nell for her efforts, while some claimed Mother Nature should have had the last laugh.

Nell thought this was not a circle of life moment at all and could have posed a danger to both animals.

“The python was capable of killing the koala, but it was far too small to ingest it. I think it was opportunistic and overestimated its meal potential. Pythons can survive for weeks, even months, without a meal, and there are many other food sources available to them that are more appropriately sized,” she said.

Koalas are unfortunately on the endangered species list and their reproduction rate is slow. Nell didn’t see a single koala in distress; she saw a bigger picture.

“They already face many other challenges that make their species vulnerable,” she said.

“They all result from habitat destruction. This leads to them crossing roads and being struck, being displaced in urban environments, being prone to predation, lacking food sources because they have a specialized diet that cannot be supplemented; they face bushfires, disease, displacement and much more.”

She hopes people will see her video and feel inspired to volunteer and put more pressure on government agencies to make koalas’ lives safer.
