Tesla driver using fully autonomous driving hits, kills man crossing I-80

A 71-year-old man was fatally struck by a Tesla operating in Full Self-Driving (FSD) mode while crossing I-80 in Vallejo, California, around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, reports the Chronicle of San Francisco. The California Highway Patrol’s media statement said it reviewed the Tesla’s dashcam video of the crash, which “showed the Tesla’s brakes applied as the vehicle moved to the left in an attempt to avoid the pedestrian… Despite these evasive actions, the front right portion of the Tesla struck the individual.”

According to the Chronicauthorities believe at least one other vehicle struck the pedestrian after the Tesla, but other than the driver of the Tesla, who stopped and remained at the scene, no other drivers stopped. The CHP Solano Regional Office is asking anyone who witnessed the crash or has information to contact them.

In another incident on I-80 last week, a driver said he was sleeping and using FSD when his Tesla crashed into a police car stopped at the scene of an accident. After this incident, CHP warned drivers that “Despite its name, fully autonomous driving is not fully autonomous. The technology does not relieve drivers of their responsibility to operate their vehicle safely.”
