The 2028 Jaguar Type 01 EV revealed with 1,015 horsepower, a 400-mile range and an even wilder look than the concept

Let’s start by getting rid of appearances. Its proportions are less exaggerated than the concept, there are some more intricate details, and sure, the Type 01 has production car elements like real side mirrors and windshield wipers, but it’s really very close to the show car – at least more than most people expected. When the Type 00 was first revealed, I made a strong case that it had total undertones of the E-Type and other classic Jags, and I think what I said also applies to the Type 01. Yes, there are a lot of straight, hard lines, but the Type 01 is also very curvy and has many details and elements that remind me of Jaguars of the past. As my colleague Brad pointed out, all the best Jaguars looked like spaceships.

The 23-inch wheels available on the Type 01 are the same size as those on the concept, and that should give you an idea of how big this thing is. Jaguar says it measures 208 inches long and 55 inches high, 9 inches longer and an inch shorter than a Porsche Panamera, and has a full greenhouse with a dramatic roofline. It has a drag coefficient of 0.23 cD according to the automaker, with the car having undergone more than 7,000 wind tunnel tests. A three-stage spoiler automatically deploys to reduce drag or increase downforce, and the car lowers more than half an inch at highway speeds.

Jaguar hasn’t specified the exact length of the Type 01’s wheelbase, but the dash-to-axle ratio (Jag calls it a “luxury gap,” but if you’re a VWVortexer, you call it a “prestige gap”) is 35 inches long, or 17 percent of the car’s length. What Jaguar calls the Fender Ingot is a piece of trim that extends that distance, the only place on the car with the old Leaper emblem. 21-inch wheels are standard, which I imagine won’t look as good as the 23s.

Up front are the thinnest headlights ever fitted to a Jag, incorporating 17,000 pixels of cornering and projection technology into just 3.3 inches of height. It has no grille, but a ribbed panel with the new Jaguar logo, but the angular lower bumper has active cooling vanes. Yes, it’s a totally new and strange face for Jaguar, but I think it looks feline. The Type 01 retains the concept’s impressive hood strakes at the base of the windshield, which extend to the top of the dashboard.

As on the concept, there is no rear window, with the Type 01 instead using a camera mounted in the roof’s shark fin. The tailgate panel has a thin piece of trim that houses the CHMSL, which has the Jaguar name engraved on it. Perhaps the Type 01’s most outrageous design feature is the entire rear end, which features more than a dozen strakes that Jaguar says will be “a key visual graphic” for the brand. A pair of full-width taillights are hidden between the strakes, illuminating when needed. The company claims that these have undergone 4,000 hours of technical development.
