The SS United States – a massive ocean liner that once carried celebrities – is set to be sunk to the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico next week, to become the world’s largest artificial reef.
It will be an auspicious end for the 990-foot ship, which broke the transatlantic speed record for an ocean liner on its maiden voyage in 1952, but has spent the past few decades bouncing from owner to owner, struggling to find a new purpose and avoid scrapping.
